High Calorie Supplements

Children with failure to thrive or feeding problems often benefit from high calorie supplements.

They can be a great addition to a child’s diet because it enables the child to receive a lot of calories in a small volume.

Before getting too excited though, consider why your child isn’t eating enough in the first place. If he has severe reflux , vomits frequently or complains of fullness quickly, these drinks may not be the answer. For many though, they are certainly worth a shot. Especially for toddlers and older children, a high calorie liquid is usually handled well and can promote weight gain.

Although drinks such as Pediasure and Boost Kids Essentials 1.0 also have many calories, for the purposes of this article a high calorie supplement is one that contains 45 calories per ounce.

Before trying one of these supplements it is recommended you consider a 30 calorie per ounce formula first. A review of these can be found here.

Scandishake: GF, Kosher Calories: 600 calories when mixed with 8 ounces whole milk Flavors: Vanilla, Chocolate Availability: Available by request from pharmacy and online at drugstore.com.

Before starting a high calorie supplement, discuss your options with your doctor. See if these are options for your child. If you haven't tried any supplementation yet, a 1 calorie per cc option may be the way to go instead of these very high calorie options. All of these supplements are available at drugstore.com.

"I just want to say: Although the sudden plunge into no Vital Jr and no baby formula was cold turkey and not easy and super scary for me, a month later, I can say that my son looks really, really good physically, is now maintaining weight, and obviously feels a little more light and happy in his physical actions. Regardless of whether the GFCF diet will end up being necessary, I am thrilled beyond words that he eats REAL FOOD, not chemicals. The lighter, more frequent meals make me feel like I am finally not causing GERD and constipation faster than I can medicate it. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help! I truly could not have done it without your help. And I feel confident that with continued tweaking with you his diet can get in more calories and complete nutrition, which makes me feel so good as a mother (especially of a chronically malnourished child, even in utero) that I am finally actually nourishing my child."
