Homemade Baby Food

While some parents think making homemade baby food for their baby is an unnecessary inconvenience, others feel the food they make at home is far superior than the ones found in jars at the store.

The truth is probably somewhere in the middle, depending on what brand and type of baby food you are going to buy or make. If you are going to buy commercially prepared baby food, organic ones are recommended. Earth’s Best and Happy baby are both good brands.

One great thing about making baby food is you know exactly what’s in it. If your child is getting carrots or sweet potatoes, you do not need to add any preservatives that are found in commercial baby foods to allow them to sit on the shelf. You can steam and puree the sweet potatoes or carrots, and that’s it. You know it’s fresh and there is nothing extra or unnatural about it. Many commercial baby foods contain salt and sugar, neither of which a baby needs.

In addition to this, once your child has tried many single fruits or veggies, you can get creative about the mixtures you make. The possibilities are endless, and as a result your child will try a number of vegetables not commonly found in baby food jars, and you can make combinations and expose them to flavors they would not be exposed to in commercial baby food.

As your child gets a little older pureed table food can be made out of family meals. Your child is getting the same meal and flavors as the rest of the family but at the appropriate consistency. By making baby food you are allowing your baby to be part of the family meal and eat the same foods as well!

Another nice thing about making baby food is its price. In many cases a whole weeks worth of food can be made for the price of 1 day’s worth of jars. If money is an issue for your family, homemade baby food is certainly more affordable than commercial baby food.

To make baby food you need a blender and storage containers. Many times you can make batches of food at once and freeze them in single serve containers and take them out as you need them. Although homemade baby food takes a little time to make, once you make a batch it is as convenient as commercial baby food, except instead of going into the pantry you are going in the freezer.

Starting to feed your child is a very exciting time. Commercial baby foods can provide high quality nutrition for your baby, and homemade baby food has many great benefits. Before automatically deciding on commercially prepared baby food, consider making your own. You may be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is, and how much your baby likes it!

"I just want to say: Although the sudden plunge into no Vital Jr and no baby formula was cold turkey and not easy and super scary for me, a month later, I can say that my son looks really, really good physically, is now maintaining weight, and obviously feels a little more light and happy in his physical actions. Regardless of whether the GFCF diet will end up being necessary, I am thrilled beyond words that he eats REAL FOOD, not chemicals. The lighter, more frequent meals make me feel like I am finally not causing GERD and constipation faster than I can medicate it. Thank you, thank you, thank you for your help! I truly could not have done it without your help. And I feel confident that with continued tweaking with you his diet can get in more calories and complete nutrition, which makes me feel so good as a mother (especially of a chronically malnourished child, even in utero) that I am finally actually nourishing my child."
